SWANA Community Senator (1 Seat)

Lugin Afini

Hello, I'm Lugin Afifi, originally from Connecticut but raised in Egypt until the age of 9. The move to the U.S. from Egypt marked a dramatic and eye-opening cultural shift between the two countries. Often, I found it challenging to express my culture and ethnicity, as they were frequently misunderstood by others. Within our community, there is a wealth of culture, history, and celebrations that deserve admiration. Unfortunately, this community has been overshadowed and violated over time, particularly in recent years with a rise in hatred. It's this recent surge of negativity that drives me to advocate for our community. Promoting inclusive representation at TCU is crucial to ensuring that the diversity on campus is represented. As a SWANA community senator, I am committed to rectifying the lack of representation. My initial initiative involves educating the campus community about the unique culture and history of our heritages and ethnicities through various events that discusses and brings our rich history and cultures together.

My second initiative is working to create aa digital platform to provide students with a space to voice their concerns to me and the University, facilitating discussions to address the issues that matter most. Additionally, I will emphasize the need of establishing a resource center for our community on campus so that it is a welcoming space where students feel represented and supported. These policies aim to enhance the overall well-being and success of our community, reflecting my commitment to a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
